About Boralet
Study cards, but actually fun.
What is Boralet?
Boralet is a free, web-based study app for flashcards and study games. Think of it like Quizlet or Knowt — but built from scratch to be the version we actually wanted to use. You can make sets by hand, paste notes for auto-parsing, upload CSVs, or let our built-in AI generate cards from your notes, files, voice recordings, or photos.
Who's behind it?
Boralet is a small, independent project run from Belgium. The site is hosted on Netlify with backend services from Google Firebase. For questions about the business or legal side, email support@boralet.com.
What can you do with it?
- Create flashcard sets (manual, auto-parse, CSV import, or AI)
- Study with 6 modes: Flash, Learn, Match, Test, Game, and 1v1 Duels
- Add friends, chat in groups, and challenge each other to duels
- Publish sets to the public catalog so other students can find them
- Earn achievements, build streaks, and climb the leaderboards
- Use it offline — sets are cached locally on your device
Free vs Boralet+
Boralet Basic is free forever. It's supported by ads (one short ad before each set save) and has a soft cap of 1 set per day and 5 AI generations per day. Boralet+ removes the ads, lifts all the limits, and unlocks file uploads to the AI — €3/month or €18/year.

Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 May 2026 · Effective immediately
This Privacy Policy explains how Boralet ("we," "us," "our") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use boralet.com. It complies with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Belgian data-protection law. By using Boralet, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Who is the data controller?
Boralet is operated from Belgium. For any privacy-related question, contact support@boralet.com.
2. What data we collect
- Account data: email address, display name, optional profile picture, password hash (handled by Firebase Auth — we never see your raw password).
- Study data: flashcard sets you create, study progress, mastery levels, achievements, streaks.
- Social data: friend lists, messages you send in chats and duels, public sets you publish, ratings and comments you leave.
- AI input: notes, files, voice recordings, and photos you submit to the AI feature. These are sent to Google's Gemini API to generate flashcards. We don't store the raw input after the response is generated.
- Technical data: IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, error logs. Collected automatically for security and bug-fixing.
- Payment data: if you subscribe to Boralet+, payment is processed by Stripe. We never see your full card number — only a subscription ID and your customer email.
3. How we use your data
- To provide the service (save your sets, sync across devices, run duels, send chat messages).
- To verify your email address and protect your account.
- To enforce our Terms of Service and moderate the public catalog.
- To send essential service emails (verification, password reset, security alerts). We do not send marketing emails.
- To generate flashcards via Google Gemini when you use the AI feature.
- To process payments via Stripe for Boralet+ subscriptions.
- To show ads (free tier only) — see Section 7.
4. Legal basis (GDPR Article 6)
- Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)): we need your data to provide the service you signed up for.
- Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)): for fraud prevention, security, and debugging.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): for non-essential cookies and personalised ads (you can withdraw at any time via the cookie banner).
- Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)): for tax records (payments) and law-enforcement requests.
5. Who we share data with (third-party processors)
- Google Firebase (Ireland/USA) — authentication, database, hosting of cloud functions.
- Google Cloud / Vertex AI (Ireland/USA) — Gemini AI generation.
- Netlify (USA) — static site hosting.
- Resend (USA) — transactional email delivery.
- Stripe (Ireland/USA) — payment processing for Boralet+.
- Google AdSense (Ireland/USA) — advertising on the free tier.
- Spaceship (USA) — domain registrar and inbound email forwarding.
We do not sell your personal data. Transfers outside the EEA are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission.
6. Data retention
- Account data: kept as long as your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of account closure.
- Study data: same as account data.
- Chat messages: kept for 90 days, then auto-deleted unless flagged for moderation.
- Server logs: kept for 30 days for security purposes.
- Payment records: kept for 7 years (Belgian tax law).
7. Cookies & local storage
We use cookies and your browser's localStorage for:
- Essential: keeping you signed in, remembering your settings, caching sets for offline use. These are always on — without them the site doesn't work.
- Analytics: measuring page views and feature usage (anonymised). Only with your consent.
- Advertising: personalised ads via Google AdSense. Only with your consent.
You can accept or decline non-essential cookies via the banner shown on your first visit. You can change your choice any time by clicking "Cookie settings" in the footer.
8. Your rights (GDPR Chapter III)
- Access: request a copy of your personal data.
- Rectification: ask us to correct inaccurate data.
- Erasure ("right to be forgotten"): ask us to delete your account and data.
- Restriction: ask us to limit how we use your data.
- Portability: get your data in a machine-readable format (the in-app "Export sets" button covers most of this).
- Object: object to processing based on legitimate interest.
- Withdraw consent: any time, via the cookie banner.
To exercise any right, email support@boralet.com. We respond within 30 days. You can also lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority (Autorité de Protection des Données / Gegevensbeschermingsautoriteit) at autoriteprotectiondonnees.be.
9. Children
Boralet is intended for students aged 13 and older. In Belgium, the digital age of consent is 13. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian to create the account and supervise your use. If we discover an account holder is under 13 without parental consent, we will close the account.
10. Security
We use industry-standard security: HTTPS everywhere, Firebase Authentication with email verification, Firestore security rules to enforce access control, App Check (reCAPTCHA v3) to prevent abuse, and password hashing handled by Google. No system is 100% secure — if you suspect a breach, email support@boralet.com immediately.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be announced via an in-app notice. Your continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.

Terms of Service
Last updated: 23 May 2026 · Effective immediately
Welcome to Boralet. These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a binding agreement between you and Boralet ("we," "us," "our") governing your use of boralet.com and any associated services (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you accept these Terms.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use Boralet. If you are between 13 and 18 (or the age of majority in your country), you must have permission from a parent or legal guardian. You may not use the Service if you are banned by us or prohibited by applicable law.
2. Your account
- You're responsible for keeping your password secret and for anything done with your account.
- You must give us a valid email address and verify it.
- You may not impersonate anyone, use someone else's account, or create multiple accounts to evade bans.
- We may suspend or terminate any account that violates these Terms.
3. Acceptable use
You agree NOT to:
- Post, share, or generate hateful, harassing, sexual (especially involving minors), violent, or otherwise illegal content.
- Upload material you don't own or have a licence to use (no pirated textbooks, copyrighted images without permission, etc.).
- Try to break, hack, or reverse-engineer the Service, or bypass security/quota limits.
- Use bots, scrapers, or automated tools to access the Service.
- Spam other users via chat, friend requests, or duels.
- Use the AI feature to generate content that violates these Terms or Google's usage policies.
Violations may result in immediate suspension, content deletion, or permanent ban.
4. Your content
You keep ownership of the flashcard sets, messages, and other content you create ("Your Content"). By posting it on Boralet, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display, and distribute Your Content as needed to run the Service. If you publish a set to the public catalog, you also grant other users permission to import and study from it (but they may not republish it as their own).
You can delete Your Content any time. We may also remove content that violates these Terms.
5. AI-generated content
The AI feature uses Google's Gemini model. AI output can be inaccurate, biased, or incomplete — always double-check important information. You're responsible for verifying anything you study from AI-generated cards. We don't claim ownership of AI output, but we also don't guarantee it's free of third-party claims.
6. Boralet+ subscription
- Boralet+ is €3/month or €18/year, billed via Stripe.
- Subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled. You can cancel any time from your account page; access continues until the end of the current billing period.
- EU consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal. By starting your subscription, you expressly request that we begin providing the service immediately, and you acknowledge that you lose the right to withdraw once we have fully performed.
- We do not offer refunds for partial periods.
- If we change pricing, current subscribers get 30 days' notice before the new price applies.
7. Ads
Free-tier users see ads, including a short ad before each set save. Ads are served by Google AdSense and other partners. We don't control ad content directly — if you see an inappropriate ad, please report it.
8. Service availability
We do our best to keep Boralet running 24/7, but we can't guarantee uninterrupted service. We may update, suspend, or discontinue features at any time, with or without notice. We are not liable for downtime, data loss, or service interruptions, except as required by law.
9. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the maximum extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that Boralet will be error-free, secure, or meet your specific needs.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose (or €0 if you're on the free tier). Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under Belgian law (e.g., gross negligence, fraud).
11. Termination
You can stop using Boralet and delete your account at any time. We can suspend or terminate your access for any reason, including violations of these Terms. Upon termination, Sections 4, 9, 10, 12, and 13 survive.
12. Governing law & disputes
These Terms are governed by Belgian law. Disputes will be handled by the competent courts of Belgium. EU consumers can also use the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. Material changes will be announced in-app. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
